Metals for Environment and Energy

●Clad metals for batteries

Besides high conductivity, these clad metals can be used for resistance welding and various other types of welding, and are useful for increasing the battery performance (higher volume and smaller size) and improving productivity as well.

【Usage example 1】

[Internal lead for batteries]
Nickel Clad Copper and Copper Clad, Aluminum for batteries (Ni/Cu, Ni/Cu/Ni, Cu/Aℓ)

These materials have lower electrical resistance than pure nickel, coupled with excellent heat dispersion properties and processability. Due to these characteristics, the materials enable production of various types of larger output and higher capacity batteries.

[External terminal for batteries]
Aluminum clad nickel for batteries (Aℓ /Ni)

These materials have good conductivity and processability. They can be directly welded to lithium-ion battery aluminum casings and terminals.

Current-collecting clad foils for LIB negative electrodes (Cu/Ni alloy/Cu)

LIBs—next-generation high-capacity devices—use Si as an active material for their negative electrodes. High-strength, low-resistance current-collecting foils are required due to the high rates of expansion and contraction during electrical charging and discharging.

  • 1. By covering a core material—a Ni alloy with outstanding strength and rolling processability—with surface layers of low-resistance pure Cu, we have developed a clad metal offering both high strength and low resistivity.
  • 2. This material boasts outstanding electrochemical stability, exhibiting no reaction or elution in LIB electrolytic solutions.
  • 3. When used in high-capacity LIBs with Si-based negative electrodes, this material exhibits outstanding charge-discharge cycle performance compared to the rolled copper foils currently used for that purpose.

Nickel-clad stainless steels for batteries (Ni/SUS304, etc.)

Having both low contact resistance and springiness, these materials are used for separators, current collectors, heat recovery, fuel processor system, etc.
